From 1846 to 1869, some 70,000 Mormons led Brigham Young blazed a trail from Nauvoo, Illinois, to Salt Lake City, Utah. Pony Express National Historic Trail traverses Wyoming. Not widely known is that the 1,800 miles from St. Joseph Missouri to Sacramento California was accomplished in just ten days! Before the telegraph the Pony Express was the only fast way for both personal & business communications to be delivered across the continent. It operated for only 18 months between April 1860 and October 1861 but the advent of the telegraph heralded its demise. There are 120 Pony Express historic sites .
