One of the new Virginia Tourist Attractions is the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail which was launched December 19, 2006. The Historic Trail commemorates Smith's historic exploration voyages in 1607-1609 on the Chesapeake Bay and connected river systems. Smith helped establish Jamestown the first successful English colony in North America named after King James I of England, Mary Queen of Scots's son. John Smith explored the vast Chesapeake region thus accelerating the colonization of North America by English settlers.

The Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail in Virginia.
In 1775-1783 ,The American Revolutionary War (the American War of Independence ) was fought between the British & the patriot militia . These patriots were mainly American settlers of Scotch-Irish descent who had settled "over"(i.e. west ) the Appalachians, so were named the "Overmountain Men". At the battle of Kings Mountain in October 07, 1780, Overmountain Men were victorious. Theodore Roosevelt , in his book, The Winning of the West , wrote of that the Battle of Kings Mountain, " marked the turning point of the American Revolution." The Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail, some 330 miles long, commemorates the routes patriots travelled. The Trail is a major Virginia outdoor attraction.

Virginia's The Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail commemorates George Washington's vision of an economic corridor from the Potomac River and the Allegheny Highlands .
