National Historic Trails in North Carolina:
Appalachian National Scenic Trail, crosses North Carolina on its 2,175 miles journey linking Maine to Georgia . It was America's First National Scenic Trail ( also known as The People's Path). Beautiful wild scenery.
In 1775-1783 ,The American Revolutionary War (the American War of Independence ) was fought between the British & the patriot militia . These patriots were mainly American settlers of Scotch-Irish descent who had settled "over"(i.e. west ) the Appalachians, so were named the "Overmountain Men". At the battle of Kings Mountain in October 07, 1780, Overmountain Men were victorious. Theodore Roosevelt , in his book, The Winning of the West , wrote of that the Battle of Kings Mountain, " marked the turning point of the American Revolution." The Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail, some 330 miles long, commemorates the routes patriots travelled. The Trail is a major North Carolina Heritage attraction.
The Trail of Tears National Historic Trail passes through North Carolina. In 1830, the Indian Removal Act forced the migration of all American Indian tribes from the east . Many Cherokee perished. The Trail of Tears National Historic Trail commemorates the Cherokee nation.
