Chickamauga, Georgia (September 19-20, 1863)
Union Maj. Gen. William Rosecrans and the Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg commanding the Army of Tennessee contested this battle in Northern Georgia. Once again very high losses were incurred by both sides but the result was viewed as a very significant Union defeat .The contest is named after West Chickamauga Creek. It is said that Chickamauga is a Cherokee phrase meaning "river of death".

National Historic Trails in Georgia :
Appalachian National Scenic Trail, some 2,175 miles long , links Maine to Georgia . It was America's First National Scenic Trail ( also known as The People's Path). Stunning scenery.
The Trail of Tears National Historic Trail passes through Georgia . 16,000 Cherokee were transferred in 1838 from the east to Oklahoma. Many perished. The Trail of Tears National Historic Trail commemorates their survival .
