Over 400 years ago, a young man from London called John Smith, working for the Virginia Company, helped establish the first successful English colony in North America named after King James I of England .The colony was called Jamestown.
John Smith explored the vast Chesapeake region in a flimsy boat at great risk from the elements & hostile Native peoples. Smith's alluring descriptions of the Bay region's forests and wildlife in his 1608 account "A True Relation of Virginia ." accelerated the colonization of North America by English settlers.
