PARADES
Wexford Saint Patricks Day Parade 2011
Thursday 17 March 2011
Wexford Town had a huge turnout for last years St. Patrick's Day Parade so make sure you come to this years 2011 St. Patrick's Day Parade. Every vantage point from Maudlintown to Redmond Square was taken up early by the thousands that turned out to watch the parade. It was a credit to the people of Wexford, who, in the hard times we are now experiencing, rose to the cause. Wexford had eight bands along with eighty two groups and floats: the biggest parade yet in the town since the parades started. It is hoped that next year's parade will be bigger and better. We already have twelve bands lined up.
The glorious sunshine was brillant on the morning and good humour, by both those participating and spectating, was a joy to see. Our sincere thanks to all those that took part in the parade, and to those that turned out to encourage and applaud the groups taking part. We would also like to extend a sincere thank you to all those that sponsored the parade. The Wexford Town St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee thank each and every one of you, and we would encourage the public to please support our contributors by shopping locally.
Wexford Town's St. Patrick's Day Parade is probably the oldest parade in the country; it started back in 1917 and continued until the outbreak of world war two. In 1946 the parade was re-started. In the early days the parade started in the Swan in the Faythe and would make its way to Rowe Street Church in time for mid-day mass.
The Wexford St Patricks Day Parade has grown over the years, and today Wexford Town hosts one of the premier parades in the country.
It assembled from the Fisher's Rowe area up to the Maudlintown area at 10.15am and moved off at 11am from the junction at Fisher's Rowe, William's Street. It took in the following route which can be seen on the map below:
William's Street, Trinity street, Paul Quay, Cresent Quay, Commercial Quay, Wellington Place, Redmond Square and West Gate. The Reviewing Stand was located on the Quay Front adjacent to the Bridge.
Last year's parade saw many floats and numerous marching bands, along with stilt walkers and face painters and was one of Wexford's best parades, despite the recession.
Groups assembled from Fisher's Rowe up to the Green in Maudlintown at 10.15am sharp, while the floats assembled at 10am from the Mace Service Station in Trinity Street on the right hand side of the road, down towards the Talbot Hotel.
Come & visit us this March!
